How To Sew a Table Square

I have been shopping around for table runners and table squares.  The ones I found were not cheap, but they looked like something I could make myself.  Turns out they are, so  I just made one for a friend.  Here’s how you can make one too!

CUT YOUR FABRIC

You can make your table square any size you want.  I wanted mine to be 36″ x 36″ so I cut:

  • 1 – 36″ x 24″ main fabric
  • 1 – 36″ x 36″ main or accent fabric for the back
  • 2 – 36″ x 7″ accent fabric
  • 2 – 1 yd. accent trim
  • 4 yards of fancy trim

SEW ACCENT AND MAIN FABRICS TOGETHER

Place you main fabric and accent fabric pieces right sides together.  Sew in place with a 1/2″ seam.  Iron the seams.

ATTACH ACCENT TRIM
I top stitched the accent trim, covering the seam that holds the main fabrics together.  I used clear thread.  A matching thread will work.

PUT IT ALL TOGETHER
Face both 36″ pieces of fabric right sides together.  Stitch with a 1/2″ seam, leaving enough room to turn it right side out.  Turn it right side out and iron.  Top stitch your fancy trim all along the edge, closing the hole.

YOU’RE FINISHED!
